Fisherman and Divers to Benefit From the Old Bridge

Work crews loaded some of the largest sections of the old bridge onto a barge early Thursday morning.

The barge is carrying the bridge pieces about 10 miles out into the Gulf. They’ll be dumped overboard where they'll become this area’s newest artificial reef.

The reefs attract fish, which in-turn attracts scuba divers and fishermen. The cost of hauling the old bridge away is part of Granite Construction Company overall bridge contract.

The Bay County Artificial Reef Program is overseeing the project.
