Travel through the community of Red Bay, between Freeport and DeFuniak Springs in Walton County, and you won't see a Publix or a Wal-mart.
What you will find is a small store called Red Bay, a kind of general store/diner that's become the town's gathering place.
The building's been there for decades but it took a bit of creative investing to establish what has become a thriving business.
Nothing better epitomizes small town U.S.A than the Red Bay Grocery.
It's not only a grocery store, but a restaurant, and a hangout for locals.
But it's also a glimpse of Red Bay history.
Katie Barrineau is the store manager and says this place is like nothing you’ve ever seen before.
"Once you walk through these doors it's like a whole different world. You're walking in to the way things used to be. Nobody's talkin' about the economy or how bad things are. Everybody's talkin about how great the fried chicken is and the barbeque and what's going on today" says Barrineau.
Karla Davidson works there too and couldn’t agree more.
" I don't know anywhere nowadays that you can get this kind of atmosphere, friendly people, and good food” Davidson says with a chuckle.
The building has been here since 1936.
The business was bought and sold over the years, never maintaining any kind of permanent ownership.
Until now.
"There's several times where you can walk into the store and you'll see someone from out of town go 'wow this place is cool, who owns it? And the ten or twelve people in there raise their hand. That's the fun part" Barrineau says of the town owned establishment.
Sixty people own a share of Red Bay Grocery.
That's more than half of the town's 100-or so residents.
They keep the business local, right where they say it should be.
John Henderson is a local shareholder and firefighter and he knows why he wants to say he’s a part of this.
"All of our produce is local, a nice small town feeling down to earth kind of store. It's a real home town, what you'd expect” says Henderson with a big smile.

The founder of the business should take a close look at how well the local concept works and appply it to his Destin location instead of treating all customers as tourist's.

stopped in and got a sandwich and cole slaw to go. It was great food. Bought some syrup and couple more things. Great atmosphere and friendly people running the place. Very clean, and smelled so good.
