Panama City's apartment dwellers may see a huge hike in their garbage rates. City commissioners are proposing a 400 percent increase in the garbage collection rate for area renters.

Currently apartment complexes pay a flat rate. Subsidized housing owners are worried because the law keeps them from passing the increase on to renters.

Commissioners also moved ahead with their plans to buy the land for the new federal courthouse. The site is located on East 6th Street across from the rescue mission, and city water workers will soon able to read your water meter without setting foot in your yard.

Commissioners approved $40,000 for radio frequency water meter readers. The new readers will be phased in over the next three months.
