Airport officials have confirmed a breach was made the south end of their construction site after Thursday's heavy rains. Neighbors believe that breach turned their nearby creeks into muddy waters.
Pictures from high above West Bay show just how much sand, silt, and debris is dumping into Burnt Mill Creek.
Parts of the creek turned a muddy red color instead of its normal "sweet tea" color.
"This is how it's supposed to look after four inches of rain. Folks will still be able to see it. You can see your hand down here in it. That over there, you can't put it under the water and you can't see it anywhere," Charles Hansen, a Burnt Mill Creek resident said.
These are pictures from high above the airport site. For several months, the site has been dealing with drainage issues.
The St. Andrews Bay Resource Management Association blames the airport's drainage project as the contributing factor to all the mud. The group was out taking water samples Friday.
"RMA's goal is to help protect St. Andrews Bay and the water shed and I would like the people to know that their voices need to be heard. They need to ask whoever is responsible to stop this immediately," Patrice Couch, Director of St. Andrews Bay RMA said.
Airport officials tell us just about every creek and bayou was muddy Friday because of the heavy downpours.
They say blaming them for the mess, without all the facts, is irresponsible.
"We work very closely with DEP and with the Army Corps of Engineers. So they are watching everything we do very closely. We're trying to do our best to adhere to the guidelines of our permits," Amy Ausley, an airport spokesperson said.
The airport does have someone from DEP on site, pretty much all the time. For months, the airport has been working on la state of the art drainage system. We're told it should be online by March...
They hope then to have all the drainage problems cleared up.
The St. Andrews Bay RMA will be discussing this very topic at Gulf Coast Community College on February 18 at 6:30 p.m. For more information, just log onto http://www.sabrma.org/.

Now that the airport authority has admitted stomwater ran into Burnt Mill Creek, "Officials said that triggered the overflow of a containment berm, spilling silt-laden runoff into the Morrell Branch tributary that flows into Burnt Mill Creek," will Ms Ausley apologize for calling the people who exposed this "irresponsible" for saying what has now been confirmed? BTW, if the contractor was doing a good job, DEP would not have fined the authority and contractor nearly $2 MILLION.
I recall that one of the reasons touted for needing a new airport was because of enviromental damage caused by the panama city airport. Does anyone recall who said that? They just did not build it good enough. It should have been built in anticipation of a tropical storm or hurricane. This was just seasonal rain.
Having lived here for 30 years and seen many heavy rains and floods on burnt mill creek i can tell you that the natural estuary process filters the water and it is just a tea color during floods. The animals, fish, and other life in the creek can survive this. With the introduction of the new airport in this fragile area, mother nature has been breached. the creeks and bays wildlife cannot survive with the introduction of the mud and silt caused by the airport construction site. The DEP and EPA are not doing enough insure that this pollution is stopped as we were guaranteed prior to construction. What used to be a beautiful and scenic pristine area will soon be reduced to a barren wasteland.
