If you ask Bay County Sheriff Frank McKeithen how he feels about the war on meth, he doesn't hold back his feelings.

"This drug takes over and destroys families, destroys lives," McKeithen said.

McKeithen says the online "Meth Check" system he asked county commissioners to pass in October is working. Although some of the bigger pharmacies were reluctant at first because of privacy concerns, every pharmacy in Bay County is now on-board.

"I just hope people see we are doing this for the right reasons," McKeithen said.

Meth Check requires all pharmacies in the county to keep records of customers who buy over the counter products containing pseudoephedrine, a key ingredient used to make meth.

The system flags those who try to buy more than the legal limit of 3.6 grams of pseudoephedrine at a time, and a total of nine grams a month.

Pharmacists aren't seeing some of the same people coming in buying the key ingredient since the Meth Check system started.

"We have a lot less. There's no doubt about it," Lu Jones, a local pharmacist told us.

And investigators are seeing a difference on the streets.

"We've seen a reduction in the labs. We're still finding them. We're working harder to find them, but nothing has changed there. We're hitting it head on. They're not finding us as often as they were," Capt. Faith Bell, of the Bay County Sheriff's Narcotics Unit said.

"This is just the way to go," Jones added.

"We know it's not going to stop the problem. If next week we can find something else that can help with will try and introduce it," McKeithen said.

Earlier this week, Walton County Sheriff Mike Adkinson said his deputies are seeing more Bay County residents trying to buy pseudoephedrine at Walton County pharmacies.

He is asking his county commission to pass a Meth Check ordinance as well.

And Newschannel 7 has learned that several other counties in our area are also considering the program.

Great job sheriff! Keep up the good work. By taking out this key ingredient in the making of meth it will significantly reduce the local production of this terrible drug and the impact upon our society. Maybe other municipalities will will follow your lead and end this plague once and for all. Thanks!
