President Barack Obama's budget proposal would end private-bank involvement in student-loan. He wants to funnel the savings into more grants to lower-income students.

That could bring an end to the Sallie Mae Corporation, which handles about one-third of the nation's student loans.

About 700 people work at the local Sallie Mae service center in Lynn Haven. They've been very vocal in their opposition to the administration's proposed reforms.

They say they have an alternate proposal that can achieve the president's financial goals, while saving local jobs.

Sallie Mae senior vice president Renee Mang said, "We don't need to lose any more jobs. Again, one job lost is one too many. He also mentioned this morning that he wanted to spend $100 billion on job creation. And I would say, let's start by saving the jobs that we have."

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed the student loan reform bill; the U.S. Senate has not begun its debates on the issue.

Grow up. You made your decisions to dump all this money into school, so now you gotta pay it back, that with any loan company, not just Sallie Mae, so stop being a huge baby and realize you did this to yourself, so stop whining and pay your bills, not anyone elses fault that you cant afford it but your own.

If your husband is 55 you'd think he'd be able to handle his finanaces a little better by now. Your basically senoir citizens now, isnt it time to grow up and stop pointing the finger at a Government run company for your own mistakes?

I say throw Sally Mae under the bus. The staff call and harrass you and don't let up. My husband cashed in his retirement money and paid off my son's loan because we were so sick of the harrassment. He was a co-signer and the staff are rude and cold. We'll have my son pay us back when he gets on his feet. Hubby won't be able to retire til he's 80 now. He's 55 now. Can't afford it. What is happening to our country?
