Guards at Tyndall's gates will scan a bar code on the ID card that contains information, like a person's name and height.

7,000 people have already registered with the Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS). But, Tyndall officials are trying to let retirees know about the change.

It is a Department of Defense initiative that streamlines ID and security systems on base. It lets officials know who should be allowed on the premises.

MSgt. A.J. Perreault said the system would "allow us the ability to better secure the base, gives the security force members at the gate better ability to secure the area before they get a look at the ID card."

Shirley Rich, who updated her card, said, the process was painless: "Just presenting my ID card and put some information in the computer, take a fingerprint and you get your ID card back and you're on your way."

If you go on base and haven't switched over to this system, go to the conference center, which is the old officer's club across the street from the hospital. It is open Monday through Friday, 7-5.
