The Alachua County Sheriff's Office arrested 50-year-old Pete Herbert last Wednesday after a deputy allegedly spotted his Toyota pickup swerving in the outside lane of State Road 93.

According to the arrest report, the deputy smelled alcohol on Herbert's breath and asked him to perform a field sobriety test, which he allegedly failed.

When he was booked into the Alachua County jail, Herbert reportedly repeatedly refused to take a breathalyzer test. He was charged with misdemeanor DUI and released Thursday.

Washington County officials say Herbert was driving his personal vehicle, but was on his way to a conference involving county business.

County officials placed him on administrative leave with pay Monday morning, until they can hold a special commission meeting Friday to determine his future.

Washington County commission chairman Eddy Holman said, "Friday at 9:00 there will be a special board meeting to determine the outcome, what we will do in this situation with Mr. Herbert."

NewsChannel 7 contacted Herbert Monday at his home in Vernon, but he had no comment.

wow. something is wrong here. a county official gets a dui and gets a paid vacation. average working joe gets a dui, probably loses his job, no paid vacation and endless classes, hurdles to jump through, jail time, probation and fines. maybe i should become a public official and start drinking and driving. i need some time off anyways.
