The state fire marshal is ruling a fatal fire early Thursday morning at Bay Point an accident. The medical examiner's autopsy is consistent with the ruling, pending the toxicology results.
The fire started around 2:00 a.m. Thursday morning at the home on Wahoo Drive in the Bay Point community. A Bay Point security guard first spotted smoke coming out the windows of the home about 2 a.m. Thursday morning.
The guard tried to alert anyone inside, but could not get in before calling 911. Firefighters found 57-year-old Kay Russell inside. She was unconscious. Paramedics tried to revive her, but were not successful.
Sheriff's investigators initially considered the possibility of foul play after finding some unexplained items in the house, but they ruled out that possibility after speaking with Russell’s family.
