Five States Join Florida’s Gas Investigation

Pennsylvania, Ohio, Vermont, Alabama and Nebraska say they will help examine documents submitted by the nation’s major oil companies to explain why prices have gone up so sharply.

Gas prices hit record highs last month in Florida and around the nation, and Crist says he’s determined to get to the bottom of it.

“We are anxious to have the opportunity to go through these documents, find out what their rational is for the price of gas being so high. I’m appreciative of the fact that it has come down some, but the reality, and I think I saw a cartoon recently that said, you know, it used to cost an arm and a leg, now it’s costing a foot and a hand. It’s still high, it’s historically high."

The Attorney General subpoenaed eight oil companies last month, requesting information about the cost, production, inventory and pricing of gasoline in Florida. They had until Wednesday to respond.

Seven of the eight have already submitted documents. Shell Oil requested a one-month extension.
