Just one click of the mouse, and your personal credit and financial standing can be in ruins. Online criminals do it everyday.
Now they're going mobile and taking you along for the ride.
Since the beginning of the computer age, criminals have found many ways to crack internet codes. Now, a new form of hacking is literally hitting the streets.
It's called "war driving" All "war drivers' need is a vehicle, a laptop and a GPS to steal information. And the irony is, they're doing it with your help.
"Depending on the strength of your network, cars can be within a quarter of a mile of your house and sit with a laptop and get to the internet through your computer," Maj. Tommy Ford, of the Bay County Sheriff's Office said.
NewChannel 7 production assistant Eric Andrako is also an Offensive Security Certified Professional, or a "white hat hacker".
He helps companies fight online criminals by teaching them what to look out for. We asked Eric to show us how it's done.
"We've got one right now. Looks like there two people looking on it now," Andrako said.
We drove around several Bay County neighborhoods looking for unsecured wireless connections. And we found plenty.
"We're picking up about five signals and three of them are unsecured right now," Andrako said.
The key to the hacker's success is your wireless router. Without a password, it's an open invitation to your network.
In July of last year, nine people were arrested for downloading child pornography. Two of the men were allegedly using someone's wireless internet connection.
“So basically that investigation led us to the unwitting party's home where we were able to track where the child pornography was sent," Ford said.
Computer experts tell us, many people are choosing convenience over security. And once hackers are in your system, they can wipe you clean in a matter of minutes.
"We're about 30 to 40 yards away from this home. Just tell us what you picked up. Right now, I'm viewing some of her websites she was surfing and she's another facebook user," Andrako said.
With this person's website information in hand, we paid a visit.
"We're doing an internet security story we’re you just on J and M tackle's website. Yes. Anything in particular you were about to do. Were you about to make a purchase? Yes make a purchase," Amanda Miller, a local business owner said.
