Captain Trey Wise claims he lost out on a $275,000 top prize when tournament officials wrongly ruled the Blue Marlin he brought in during last year’s Billfish Invitational Tournament was not of legal size.
It was an inch shy of the tournament minimum length of 99 inches.
Wise was later arrested for taking an undersized Blue Marlin, but was found not guilty at his Panama City trial.
Wise is suing the tournament sponsors, its director Bill Spann and the News Herald newspaper, among others.
He claims he was the victim of a conspiracy to deny him the money and publicity of winning the tournament because his boat was not manufactured by one of the tournament’s sponsors.
The 12 count lawsuit seeks more than $1 million in damages.
Spann told NewsChannel Seven "All Wise has to do is prove he had a legal size fish.”
