Local Girl Dies in Central Florida Jet Ski Accident

Miranda Clavijo, 8, Panama City and her father, Mark Clavijo, 38, from Lynn Haven, were riding on a Kawasaki jet ski personal watercraft when they collided with a 22-foot pontoon boat on the Homosassa River north of Tampa.

According to investigators with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the pontoon boat operator, Jeffrey Allen, 41, from Brooksville, saw that the jet ski was on a collision course.

The pontoon boat reduced speed, but did not change course. The jet ski continued in the same direction and collided into the bow between the pontoons.

Miranda was seated in front of her father on the jet ski. She was killed on impact with the pontoon boat. Her father was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

There were four passengers aboard the pontoon boat: Miranda’s 5-year-old brother, Colton; Sylvia Allen, 40, Brooksville; Anthony Simler, 41, and Carli Simler, 8, both from Lynn Haven.

The occupants of both vessels were taking part in a two family vacation.

Miranda was a student at Northside Elementary School in Panama City.
Her father, who's in critical condition, is a counselor at Margaret K. Lewis for Exceptional Children in Panama City.

The investigation is continuing.
