Panama City Beach- What's going to happen to all the money the state has fined the new airport over stormwater run-off pollution? Most of it will be staying here in Bay County.
On Thursday Panama City Beach Council members approved a proposal to extend sewer lines on the far west side of Grand Lagoon. Eighty homes closest to the lagoon, which also have the oldest septic tanks, will recieve sewer service first. Three hundred and thirty thousand dollars of the cost will come from the Department of Environmental Protection fines levied agsainst the airport authority and contractor Phoenix Construction.
Council members hired Baskeville Donovan Engineering firm to handle design and permitting. "They'll be starting near Joan Avenue near the tail end of the lagoon, where the flushing is not as good. When the water circulates it doesn't flush as well so we are going to start over there and over time, it may take 10 to 15 years, there is 16 or 17,000 homes so it's going to take some time, but we will get there eventually," said PCB City engineer Al Shortt. Construction will begin later this year and wrap up in early to mid 2011.
