Bay District School Board members will be in for a pay cut if a new budget cutting proposal now before the Florida legislature becomes law.

The state senate is considering a budget measure that would save the state 1.5 million dollars a year by capping school board members salary at $29,000 a year. That's the same salary the lawmakers earn.

This would mean a pay cut of more than $3,000 a year for Bay District School Board members, who are currently paid an annual salary of $32,304. It had been higher, at a $33,062, but the board voted itself a pay cut earlier.

School board members in small counties would not be impacted because they earn less than $29,000. The only other county in our viewing area that would see a reduction in pay would be Okaloosa (Ft. Walton Beach/Crestview), where the board members would lose about $5,000 annually.

One school official we talked with pointed out that, for the second straight year, only school officials, and no other constitutional officers are being targeted for pay cuts by the state. Last year, the legislature reduced the School Superintendents salaries.

Many school districts throughout the US pay school board members a stripend to cover personal incidental costs. Why does the State of Florida have the right to dictate local SB salaries? Where is community service by these people? Get this law off the books and help all school districts meet the needs of the kids!

It seems to me if you have a local government board of any kind in Bay County its all about the personal interest of the board not what’s important like the children or the tax payers. I was at a school function this year one of the coldest winters in history and watch the administrator make the children remove their coats while inside because they were not school colors, this is school board policy for our small children!! Letting the children be chilled because their coat was the wrong color!! But then when one of the board members daughters job was in jeopardy we could slate this important issue for the next meeting, call the ethics commission, use the attorneys time to research changing policies. Trim the fat at the administration level not in the class room. As to the dress code rules why it doesn’t apply to everyone teaching or in the office if it’s such a great concept. It’s a double standard what ever happened to lead by example?
