It's that time of year to spring your clocks forward an hour.

Newton County Fire Service Firefighter Ashley Moss checks the smoke alarms at Station 9 on Mount Zion Road to ensure batteries are fresh and the alarms are in good working order. The NCFS reminds residents that when clocks are reset, it is a good time to check out smoke alarms. Before going to bed tonight, clocks need to be set ahead one hour for Daylight Saving Time.

Another good idea to consider this time of the year: changing out the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

The National Fire Protection Association is even suggesting you upgrade your detector to a dual smoke detector.

Captain Joe Cocco with the Panama City Beach Fire Rescue agrees.

"Well they have two technologies. The photo-electric and the ionization are actually married together in one detector and that is going to give your family fair warning in case there are two different fires. Whether it's a fast moving fire or a small slow moving fire," says Cocco.

Cocco also says one of the best ways to protect your family during a fire is a fire escape plan. It's recommended you practice it twice a year.
