Bay County to Discuss Utilities and Meeting Time Tuesday
Bay County commissioners will take up a motion to return oversight of private utilities to the state Public Service Commission (PSC), and they will discuss meeting in the evening.

Two weeks ago, commissioners tabled the utilities issue. Residents of Bayside and Sandy Creek communities left after they realized the board wouldn't take a vote.
But, Commissioner Mike Thomas met with them out in the lobby. He told concerned residents he wanted to do some research on the issue so he could make an informed decision; that could come Tuesday.
About six years ago, the county commission voted to take over regulation of private water and wastewater utilities, which affects about 400 customers in the county.
Some say holding rate hearings could cost the county too much money, and that's why they wanted to turn it over to the PSC.
But, residents say returning jurisdiction to the state could result in unfair rate increases.
Commissioners will also discuss the schedule for future Bay County commission meetings.
Two weeks ago, Gregory Dossie of the RainbowPUSH coalition officially asked the commission to hold its meetings in the evening.
He proposed an alternating schedule of 4:00 and 5:00. Dossie claims the 9:00 a.m. meetings aren't accessible, saying people can't take off two times a month to attend in the tough economy.
Commissioners say they tried holding evening meetings in the past, and it did nothing to boost attendance.
Latest Comments
As long as there's good coverage of the meetings, no one needs to attend. You can always send a letter or email if you want to make comments to the commission. And if you want your comments public, you can always send a letter to the Editor of the News Herald. It should not be necessary for citizens to actually attend a meeting and talk in person to the Commission if they want their opinions considered.
