State Fire Marshall Tom Gallagher presented the 300 some detectors Thursday at the Lynn Haven Fire Department. The devices are set to go in at-risk homes at no cost.

Starting August 1, firefighters will install the smoke detectors and also do a fire safety inspection on homes, which will help identify potential fire hazards before something happens.

"Our goal is to have detectors that work in every home we possibly can. That little smoke detector saves lives," said Gallagher.

If you'd like more information on the free smoke detectors, call the Lynn Haven Fire Department at 265-1112. The free detector program was developed by the State Fire Marshall’s Office and the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes.

It's paid for by a grant from a combination of companies including the Home Depot and State Farm insurance.
