Commissioners moved ahead with plans to build a new county animal shelter. For the last three years, Lynn Haven has been handling the animal control duties for the county, but city officials want out of the deal saying the county has taken advantage of the city's hospitality.

Tuesday county commissioners agreed saying it's time to get the ball rolling to continue services.

Commissioner Cornel Brock says animal control is the county's responsibility.

"And then you have the actual animal control issue which is a health and safety issue which is the responsibility of the county and the respected municipalities. Dangerous animals have to be brought under control."

Commissioners have already approved using a piece of county land off Highway 231, near the county waste incinerator. The new shelter would cost an estimated $1.3 million.
