This week Washington County Commissioners honored him again by dedicating a portion of Highway 279 in his name.
They posted a plaque showing the honor outside his home and gave his widow, Nelly Mitchell, a special plaque.
“It’s a wonderful feeling. This memorial will help people remember who my late husband was and all the good that he did.”
Mitchell, known to many as “Big Sam”, is credited with bringing a lot of new jobs and state money to the area, including the funding for Highway 279.
The portion of Highway 279 dedicated to Sam Mitchell is between Caryville and Vernon in Washington County.
