Panama City commissioners took one step forward towards a new federal courthouse complex.
The city has now acquired the largest portion of a proposed site where commissioners hope a federal courthouse will be located. The two-acre site will cost the city around $560,000, significantly lower than what commissioners thought they might have to pay.
The proposed site for the federal courthouse is located at the corner of 6th Street and Massilina Bayou, which sits across from the Rescue Mission. The city's interest in the land has gotten the approval of neighbors and business owners in the area, who say it will help revitalize that section of downtown.
The city still has to buy about 10 more small parcels of land to acquire the entire site. In the end it will probably cost the city around $3 million.
