Co-defendant's Sentence Cut for Testifying Against a Panhandle Doctor

Updated: Thu 2:50 PM, Aug 05, 2004

A co-defendant received a reduced sentence for testifying against a Panama City doctor convicted of illegally prescribing and dispensing medications that led to two overdose deaths.

U.S. District Court Judge M. Casey Rodgers says she sentenced Duane Oxenham to three years because he was truthful and his testimony damaged the credibility of Dr. Freddie Williams, the main defendant in the case.

Oxenham's sentence was seven years below the minimum under sentencing guidelines.

The 37-year-old Oxenham of Southport pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute controlled substances in March. He could have gotten ten to 13 years if not for his cooperation.

Williams of Panama City has already been convicted. He is facing 20 years to life when sentenced September 1.
