Lawsuit Charges Bridge Worker Improperly Terminated

Updated: Fri 4:11 PM, Aug 13, 2004

A whistleblower says he was wrongly fired for reporting substance abuse during the construction of the new Hathaway bridges.

Joel Yaws sued Granite Construction Friday. Yaws says he was fired after he reported cocaine and severe alcohol consumption by a supervisor.

Yaws claims in his lawsuit a Granite manager told "him" that he would be easier to replace than the supervisor. Yaws also says workers began calling him "narc".

The lawsuit says one day after he was terminated a bridge worker fell to his death.

His suit claims the supervisor blamed him for the death, because they didn't have enough workers. Several had been fired for failing drug tests after Yaws reporting the alleged drug use.

Yaws is suing for reinstatement, back wages, damages and attorneys fees.
