Bridge Contractor Fine Goes to $6.5 Million

While drivers in the Panama City area are thrilled about the new, wider Hathaway Bridge, its late construction has resulted in nearly $6.5 million worth of fines against the company that managed the work.

The Florida Department of Transportation officially “accepted” the new bridge as completed on July 30, but that was only after Granite Construction had accrued fines of $30,000 a day for missing the January 24 completion target.

Company spokesman Bill Crittenden says Granite might try to negotiate a lower fine with the state.

In the past Granite had blamed the delays of weather and a shortage of workers.
