The Florida Board of Education has picked a veteran state employee to take over the state school system.
John Winn has 30 years of experience in the field, starting as a classroom teacher and spending the last 20 years working in state government.
The announcement was made by Phil Handy of the Florida Board of Education.
“He’s the most capable, probably fits the most logical as it relates to being chief operating officer of the department, and if you look at the qualifications, John fills those qualifications. As I’ve said before, Florida’s a very unique place and John’s knowledge and participation in where we are is a pretty big ingredient to his being the next commissioner.”
Winn replaces Education Commissioner Jim Horne who is stepping down at the end of the month. He’s resigning for personal family reasons.
