It Appears a Major Thorn in the Side of Local Drivers Has Been Eliminated

Updated: Thu 4:39 PM, Aug 19, 2004

Traffic seems to be moving more quickly over the westbound lanes of the new Hathaway Bridge.

The Florida Department of Transportation opened what is now being called "The world’s longest turn lane" this week.

Drivers can now use all three lanes westbound coming off the bridge, instead of the previous two lanes when traveling from Panama City to the beaches.

The inside lane on Highway 98 extends all the way to the two turn lanes at the Thomas Drive, a distance of almost three-quarters of a mile

DOT is making the changes to relieve the massive traffic jams caused by drivers waiting to turn onto Thomas Drive. These drivers waiting to turn left actually blocked all westbound traffic. In some cases the backup was more than four miles long.
