South Walton Landmark to Close Down for Good

Updated: Wed 10:07 PM, Aug 25, 2004

Cotton’s Produce in Walton County has long been known for its homegrown produce, market atmosphere and friendly service, and many customers are surprised to hear the 20-year-old institution is coming to an end.

If you drive to fast on US 331 just south of Choctawhatchee Bay and you might miss it, but there are plenty of tourists and locals in south Walton who know about Cotton’s Farm Produce Store.

It started as a small fruit stand in the mid 1980’s, just selling tomatoes and boiled peanuts. From this it’s grown into a pretty big fresh produce operation, but after the doors close on Sunday evening the cash register will ring no more.

Upcoming road construction and uncertain property plans have convinced the 71-year-old owner to hang it up. He says it’s just time for him to go and he’s ready to retire.

Cotton’s Produce will close its doors for the last time Sunday evening at 6 p.m.
