Coastal Florida Property Affected By BP Could Be Revalued For Tax Purposes

People who are losing property value because of the BP oil spill can now have the value of their homes and businesses reassessed.

Florida property values are assessed January first, but Governor Charlie Crist signed an executive order today allowing coastal properties to be reassessed.

Crist says property owners can then take the difference between the old value and the diminished values and send BP the bill.

"An interim assessment will give property owners the documentation they need to hold BP accountable. We remain vigilant to look out for oil that maybe headed our way. Our tourism industry, hotels, our restaurants, our fishermen, our seafood workers all depend on the Gulf of Mexico and our beautiful beaches.”

There’s still no guarantee that BP will pay the difference.
