In 2009 a Destin businessman announced plans to open a topless bar, called the oasis, on mountain drive, in the middle of a business district. The city denied him the proper permits so he sued. The two sides reached a compromise, which resulted in the city's adult business ordinance, restricting topless bars to industrial areas. Now the same Atlanta company which owns Oasis called Trident Operations has come forward with plans for a club called the runway in one of those industrial areas off Airport Road. Neither the city or trident operations would talk about the proposal but we found plenty of residents and nearby business owners who did.
"Well I wouldn't have any objections to it. I think they probably could use a little entertainment for whoever would like to go there" said Maryann Woods.
"We're tourist oriented and we're military oriented and it's just not the kind of people we want to bring in here" said Marylyn Okonczak.
"I don't think it's a good idea. Destin is a family oriented town and I would like to see it stay that way" said Kathy Trotter.
"Well it's a mixed bag because i believe in the freedom to have your business. I understand how they want to have the maintain the integrity of the community and I think there probably could be a better place for it than a residential neighborhood like airport road" said Mark Skarupa.
"My first concern is the neighbors need to know about it. This is a community crisis to have a strip joint in the middle of a neighborhood. You just can't have that. It's an outrage, it's morally deplorable, i find it offensive" said Kelly Haeusler.
Trident operations have not submitted a formal development application to the city. But many believe the city won't have any choice but to approve the applications.
"It's going to happen. There's no reason why the city of Destin could deny them when they've got all their ducks in a row and a place for them to go. So I don't know what can be done but i want the citizens of Destin to know this is fixing to happen" said Haeusler.
Representatives with the city of Destin say as of now there isn't a timeline for moving forward with the project.
