Southeast Alabama health officials are investigating a mysterious respiratory illness.
Two people have died and five are hospitalized. All seven patients had symptoms of a fever, cough and shortness of breath. All were admitted to Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan starting last Thursday.
Dr. Mary McIntyre of the Alabama Department of Public Health told NewsChannel 7, "That actually looks for viruses and bacteria so we can try to make sure we're not dealing with anything unusual. / Fever cough and shortness of breath, they really need to call their doctor. Covering your cough, washing your hands frequently, don't cough in your hand and then shake someone else's hand to deal with spreading stuff, to try and avoid that."
One patient tested positive for the H1N1 flu virus and another tested positive for a type of flu.
However it's unclear what exactly is causing the illness.
