PANAMA CITY-- A community outreach group has come together to take back the streets of Panama City. Thursday night was day two of their door-to-door effort.

In the last two months, there's been six murders in Panama City alone. Now law enforcement is asking the community for help to keep the streets of Panama City safe.

"Law enforcement came to the community saying we need help and as the community has come together and begun talking about what help we can provide," Lead Coalition Organizer Janice Lucas said.

The group has formed "Lead Coalition," a grassroots effort built by community leaders and backed by Bay County Sheriff Frank McKeithen, Panama City Police Chief Scott Ervin, Gulf Coast State officials, and Bay District School Superintendent Bill Husfelt.

Since Wednesday night, Lead Coalition has been taking back the streets, going door-to-door handing out Crimestoppers fliers and offering support. "Many of the people were receptive to the information, they were glad to talk with us and the children of course were pretty happy," Lucas said.

Until Tuesday night, the group will be visiting different neighborhoods where violence is more prone. Every night for a week, new law enforcement officers will be by their side to keep the peace. "We are alternating Bay County Sheriff's Department one night providing security and walking with us and the Panama City Police Department the next night," she said.

Lead Coalition also wants to help family members that have had loved ones taken from them, in acts of violence, by offering grief counseling.

Lead Coalition is in the beginning stages of planning. Members say they could use more help. They will have a community meeting at the AD Harris Learning Village August 12. The event starts at 6:00 pm and everyone is invited.
