Autism Auction Raises Thousands of Dollars

Panama City- Sunday marked the 15th Annual Autism Auction at Angelo's Steak Pit in Panama City Beach. Hundreds gathered for a great cause and a good time.

The event is a major money-maker for area autism education and therapy groups. Last year the silent auction raised upwards of $50,000. The fundraiser is hosted by the local Butchikas family whose daughter Camille was diagnosed with the disorder 15 years ago.

Her father, George Butchikas, said over the past 15 years, awareness events like this one has helped bring attention to what was once a largely unheard of disorder.

"When we started 15 years ago nobody knew what Autism was. We started it just to bring awareness to it and now it's grown into an A.D.A. program and now she has a clinic named after her at Florida State University," said Butchikas.

Organizers said they raised between $40,000 and $50,000 at this year's event.
