The wife of the late Callaway Mayor Bob Thompson says she now knows what killed her husband, something called apophysomyces.
Reeda Thompson says she received the official autopsy report a few days ago from the medical examiner's office.
Thompson died May 26th, about a month after he was elected. Authorities initially reported he died from a heart attack. But his wife claimed he contracted a deadly infection while inspecting a sludge-filled ditch in Callaway Point.
Callaway officials say they've never had any problems with the ditch, which is regularly maintained.
Bay County Health Department officials say the mold in question is quite common.
Apophysomyces infections are caused by soil or decaying plants getting into the body through an injury or an insect bite. Although rare in humans, it is often fatal.
Reeda Thompson has said she expects Callaway to compensate her family, claiming Mayor Thompson died while carrying out his duties as Mayor.
