PANAMA CITY - Bay County employees traveling for business will see a change with their reimbursements soon. County commissioners approved revising the traveling policy to be more in line with federal standards.
Commissioners brought the issue up at a recent meeting saying that some employees had to pay for their meals out of their own pockets because the reimbursement rate was too low.
The federal guidelines the commission adopted this morning would base reimbursement rates on a sliding scale. That means depending on what city a county employee is doing business in would affect their reimbursement rate.
"They're going for the benefit of the county in this case and I don't think it's reasonable to expect them to have to pay out of pocket above and beyond. I think we should at least pay their way," said Guy Tunnell, Bay County Commission Chairman.
County employees using their own cars would also be reimbursed based on the IRS Standard Mileage Rates guidelines under the new changes.
Currently the county provides a flat reimbursement rate for meals when county employees travel on business.
