Bay County commissioners met Thursday morning to discuss the budget for 2013. While the budget for next year ends in the positives, it isn't enough. According to officials on the board, Florida recommends that Bay County have $4 million left over at the end of the year in case of an emergency, however the budget only has $1.2 million.
Commissioners decided that the best solution was to shift some assigned money around, possibly cutting 10 to 12 mid to upper level supervisor positions, as well as cutting services available in the city. The move is one that commissioner George Gainer believes will be the most effective for the community.
"The people have made it very clear that they will get by without services," he says, "but they will not tolerate higher taxes. We're in tough economic times and we just have to tighten up our belts with what we got."
