The Naval Warfare Center hosted a celebration with keynote speaker CW4 Phillip Brashear. He is the son of the first black navy master diver.
His father, master chief Carl Brashear passed away in 2006. His story is best known from the 2000 Robert Dinero and Cuba Gooding Jr. movie "Men of Honor."
In it, Gooding Jr. portrays Bashear as he becomes both the Navy's first black master diver, and the first ever amputee to be a certified diver.
"It's just such a great honor to know my father was part of the change that made America the great county that it is. Its an honor to be here representing and of course to be here in the diving community. There are a bunch of divers located right at this base. It's an honor to be here with them because my father set them up for what they are going through," said Bashear.
