Borders Books announces company-wide liquidation, 30 will lose their jobs when Pier Park location closes soon
Panama City Beach - Thirty local workers will soon be out of a job. Michigan-based Borders Books announced Monday it's closing its remaining 400 stores, including the Pier Park location on Panama City beach. Borders closed about half of it's stores in February as part of reorganizational bankruptcy plans. The Pier Park store survived that round. But this time it appears there will be no storybook ending.

Readers immersing themselves in another world, the smell of new books, the sound of espresso machines. But all this could be gone by the end of the week. Borders book store chain is closing. General Manager Erin Johnson broke the news to her 30 employees Monday afternoon. "Everyone is of course disappointed, we are sad. You know alot of us have been here since the store first opened so we've been on the journey since it first began."

The news hit Rosenwald High School reading teacher Michael Petty pretty hard. "It's convenient, great prices and I'm sad that it is closing. Once the store closes I will go to Books a Million or drive to Destin to the Barnes and Noble." "i don't know of any other book stores on the beach at all," said Borders regular Sabrina Tuttles. "It's so sad because I come here like almost every other day. It's quiet, and there are books so I can take a break. It's really sad, I just found out and i'm pretty upset about it," said Ashley Pacicco, who was there studying for the GRE exam.

As upset as customers seem, the workers are even more devastated. "We were all hoping it wouldn't come to that, but we have all been preparing ourselves in the eventuality that it might happen," said Johnson.

The company hasn't released a timeline for store closings, or a date for liquidation sales. Borders currently employs nearly 11,000 people nationwide.

Can't say I'll miss it. The prices are high and I have been disappointed in their selection each time I went there. I quit going after 3 tries. Maybe they'll sell their stock real cheap when start locking up, maybe I can find something if it's 75% off.

Sorry but you're closing the wrong store. Went into Books-a-Million on Tuesday because I was in town and that was the nastiest store I've ever seen in my life. Close this one and let Borders roll-on!!! I'm gonna miss it.

Selling $3.00 espressos so people can read $60.00 books and put them back on the shelf is not a good business model.
