Brandon Mullins Wins Teacher of the Year for Bay County

Innovations Federal Credit Union and the News Herald sponsored the 2013 Bay District Schools Teacher of the Year awards ceremony Thursday at the Bay Point Wyndham resort.

The field of 41 was narrowed to 5 finalists.

The finalists are Jennifer Collier from Mosley High, Tracey Sirmans of Everitt Middle, David Hicks of Mowat Middle, Brandon Mullins of Parker Elementary and Andrea Purdie of Southport Elementary.

The Teacher of the Year went to Brandon Mullins.

Mullins teaches science at Parker and says he is especially gratified that science is getting recognition.

“Science is what I'm passionate about. It's good to see science get its forefront now. It's still not where it needs to be in my opinions, but we're putting more of an emphasis on it. And, science just makes the world more fun. It explains things, light bulbs flying. The kids get really into it," said Mullins.

"The point is we have a plethora of good teachers. Just to be able to honor one, it's such a pat on the back to the rest of them that work so hard. To know that this is the way the community recognizes them, they appreciate it. We appreciate it. It's just a fun time," said Bay County Schools Superintendent Bill Husfelt.

Mullins will go on to represent Bay County in the Florida Teacher of the Year awards program. He also receives an island cruise for tow with airfare, nearly 700 dollars in cash and gift cards for the event sponsors, and a scholarship in his name is going to a Gulf Coast student who will major in education at FSU PC.
