Bridge Completed in Vernon

Vernon, FL-- The Florida Department of Transportation and the City of Vernon announced the completion of the new Vernon Bridge on State Road 79

Just before lunch there was a ribbon cutting on the South to North entrance that celebrated the culmination of more than three years of construction in the area.

The 21.2 million dollar project began July 20th, 2009 and was officially opened to traffic this past January.

Along with the new bridge there is a new traffic light at the intersection of State Road 277 and 79.

The bridge is part of a continuing effort by FDOT to widen 79 from U-S 98 in Bay County to I-10 in Holmes County.

FDOT Third District Secretary Tommy Barfield explains how this will greatly benefit the city of Vernon,

"The traffic signal here, was certainly to improve the safety of all the traveling public, not just on 79 but in the City of Vernon. So we are excited about that. Just the ease of congestion, you think about the school buses that are coming on to the highway. Because the schools are basically on each side of State Road 79, that's certainly going to be enhanced because of the safety. And certainly as we move forward to the completion of the four-laning, I think it's going to ease congestion throughout Northwest Florida."
