Panama City Beach - A group of about 50 children spent Wednesday with local firefighters at Shipwreck Water Park. The kids are all from Camp Amigo, The Children's Burn Camp of North Florida is a week long camp for burn victims ages 7 to 17.
13 year old Naomi Thornton’s first year at the Camp Amigo. When she was little, Naomi suffered 3rd degree burns while staying with a babysitter. She says camp has helped improve her self-esteem.
"I felt like I was the only one in the world that was burned and didn't know anyone else and nobody really understood it and nobody still does understand what its like to be different to be burned, but to me its a blessing because if I wasn't burned I wouldn't be here," said Thornton.
Burn victims have different needs than most people, like protecting their skin from the sun with an appropriate sunscreen. The one thing most say they don't worry about is stares.
"I’m going to have my shirt off and be a proud burn survivor today its going to be a good time and if we get questions we are going to let them know we are burn survivors and we're out here having fun, we're just like them, but we might have a few scars on ourselves," said Jason Purvis, camp counselor.
Each camper at Camp Amigo has their own tragic story to tell, but they say while their here at Shipwreck Island Water Park those worries are washed away.
"Some kids haven't been to a water park yet and some of the kids who have burn injuries are scared to be at a water park with their burns, but here they are with other people like them," said Cassie Null, camp counselor.
Camp Amigo campers have been visiting Panama City Beach and Shipwreck island for 11 years. To find out more about Camp Amigo you can visit their website at www.campamigo.com.
