Candidates Face Rare Opposition

FREEPORT - The City of Freeport is holding an election today where, for the first time in a long time, the mayor and several council members actually have an opponent.

Mickey Marse has been mayor for 22 years. This is the first time he's faced a challenger since 2005.He's running against flower shop owner Russ Barley.

Marse said he considered retiring from public office, but decided to run again because he does not believe Barley is the right person to lead the city.

Councilman Earl King has also held his seat for 22 years. He can't remember the last time he was opposed. King is facing former councilmember Janice McLean.

Councilman Charlie Simmons, who was elected unopposed eight years ago and hasn't been challenged since, is running against Jennifer Laird, a chiropractor.

And Councilwoman Elizabeth Brannon, who was elected four years ago, is being challenged by funeral home worker Dottie Hunter.
