Longtime Panama City businessman Charles Whitehead died this morning from an extended illness. Friends of the family say he died peacefully at home at Panama City Beach with his family and friends by his side.

Mr. Whitehead, in addition to being a successful businessman as owner of Cook-Whitehead Ford, was very active in Florida politics for years. He was head of the Florida Democratic Party and was selected to lead the Democrats statewide a number of years in succession in the 1980’s and late in the 90’s

Whitehead sold his Ford dealership to AutoNation, which recently changed the name from Cook-Whitehead.

He will be remembered for his many private efforts to help a lot of charities and private citizens. Much of his generosity was never public but there are many people who have a sad heart on the news of his passing.
