There could soon be three new charter schools in Bay County. The Bay District School Board approved three of five new charter school applications Tuesday.

The schools are Central Bay Haven Charter Academy Middle School, the Rising Leaders Academy and the St. Andrew bay land school.

Central Bay Haven Academy will be a Middle School. Chief Executive Officer of Bay Haven Charter Academy, Inc., Dr. Tim Kitts, says there are no concrete plans for the school such as a location or opening date.

The Rising Leaders Academy will be an elementary school with the option of expanding to K-12 that will include a mini medical school.

The St. Andrew Bay Land School application indicates it will be at the old airport site. It will be an elementary school that incorporates science, technology, engineering and math-or the STEM program.

Bay Haven Charter Academy Inc. submitted an application for two virtual schools. The board decided to postpone their vote until the December 13th school board meeting.

I would be interested in a study of student performance in high school post-charter school as compared to those educated by public schools. That would probably be a better measure than FCAT scores.

You tax dollars are not going to fund the charter school. Children in charter schools are usually wealthier than those in public school. Therefore the funding of all charter schools and some public schools is coming from the parents who send their kids to charter schools, not from your tax money.

They won't be better educated by charter schools. Public schools out-perform charter schools. Google it.
