Panama City Beach - It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas on Panama City Beach. The Bay County Tourist Development is hanging millions of Christmas lights for "Fun for the Holidays" event. The TDC will spend one million dollars of BP marketing grant money on "Fun for The Holidays" promotion.
You can already see Panama City Beach being transformed into a winter wonderland. Garland decorates the county pier; lights are hanging from trees at Shipwreck Island.
"It's been a family destination for years and years and we want to pull all those family's back down here for the Christmas holidays and we got to thinking what makes Christmas, Christmas and it's lights and its fun and it's family," said Tammala Spencer.
There will even be an attraction that's usually reserved for people who live in colder climates. The rink will be located in the middle of the old Miracle Strip Amusement Park parking lot. The TDC is using more than $1 million lights for the fun of the holiday's event. There are even reports of underwater lights at the county pier.
"I’m not at liberty to say you know there are some Christmas secrets," said Spencer.
"Fun for the Holidays" kicks-off on November 18th at 6:00, with a performance by the Panama City Pops. For more information you can visit the TDC website at www.visitpanamacitybeach.com.

I believe the christmas lights are a beautiful way to help give cheer in the atmosphere. After many years of health issues and too many surgeries to count I have recently become handicapped with many complications. My family and I now have many unforseen obstacles and this time of year is especially difficult to make it through, but I figure that I'm thankful that the lord did this to me instead of someone who couldn't handle all of this. Even though times are hard now I always put everyone first and I know that the lord is with me and He will help me through all of this one day. All that aside I wanted to tell you that when my family and I rode by the skating rink with the beautiful christmas lights especially the ones that look like falling stars; it helped to cheer me up and put a smile on our faces. We started talking about the lights and how fun it will be to go skating out there. I told my family I would watch and take their pictures. Thank you for creating a way to spend quality (technology free, if you know what I mean)time with my family laughing and admiring the beautiful scenery. All that beauty helps to remind us that Jesus is the reason for the season.
Really!!! 1 million dollars!!! When is the TDC going to have checks and balances? It seems like Dan Rowe does whatever he feels like doing... no accountabliity! After spending $100K on Alton Brown and making no tax dollars for heads in beds, patrons in restaurants, or shops. When will it end?
While a million dollars would help a lot of needy children in the area the TDC is NOT a charity and for that matter neither is BP. From what I understand, the TDC's focus is on increasing tourism at the beach and Bay county which brings in revenues on many fronts. So aka and Al, how would you spend a million $ for marketing Bay County and it's beaches?...and if you feel so strongly about helping needy children, start a charity or give to one that is already active. I too would like to celebrate Thanksgiving before Christmas is thrust upon us.
