Commander Serow Speaks At First Friday

BAY COUNTY-- At Friday's combined chamber meeting, members heard from the commander of the Naval Support Activity about the impact of the facility on the local economy.

Commander Christopher Serow gave the business leaders a brief overview of the activities the base supports and tell them about the unique facility bringing in about a half billion dollars annually for the local economy. About two thirds of that figure is for salaries for the heavily civilian populated base.

The base will soon be expanding and combining its medical care facility .

"On August 7th we'll be breaking ground on a new joint VA Navy medical facility . One unique aspect of this facility is it's going to be accessible from off base straight off of Magnola drive so patients won't need to come through the gate to access medical care," Commander Serow said.

Construction of the new 30,000 square foot facility will take about a year to complete
