Community Garden Honors Ponce De Leon

In celebration of the 500th anniversary of Ponce De Leon's arrival in Florida, the Gulf Coast State College is honoring the states founder with the Ponce De Leon plantation.

The garden will feature sugar care, sweet potatoes, maize and other foods that grow well in drier climates.

The $2000 needed for the project was donated by area soil and water agencies, who want to make farming relevant in Bay County.

"For years we had farming in Bay County, but now that is pretty much done. So this is a good thing. Maybe we can get a few gardeners started. Maybe some people will plant some sugar cane. But it's something to help people understand the farm community," said John McMurray of Bay Soil and Water.
