JACKSON COUNTY A Cottondale congregation is working to rebuilding its church.
Fire destroyed The First Baptist Church's sanctuary on Thanksgiving Day. The fire may have a bigger meaning for the church.

For Pastor Jack Brock last year's fire began a new chapter in his 27-year career.

"It’s been a long process,” said Pastor Jack Brock. “A lot of hurt, a lot of heartache and a lot of emotions. And we've gotten by the emotions and just looking forward to moving forward."

Brock received a call after last year's thanksgiving evening service, informing him his First Baptist Church was on-fire. When he arrived on the scene, he was speechless.

"It was a sad time, it really was,” he explained. “A lot of memories here. In 27 years, you see god do a lot of things."

Investigators determined an electrical short in the breaker panel started the fire. Right now Brock is holding church services in the youth center. But crews are now demolishing what's left of the old church, preparing the site for the new sanctuary.

The plans call for a slightly larger, more modern-looking church.
Brock says he expects the project to be completed sometime next year.
