For the past couple of months, DeFuniak Springs Mayor Bob Campbell has been looking for ways to attract more people to Lake DeFuniak
"What can we do to reciprocate with South Walton, and one of the things I thought of is let's use our lake,” said Mayor Campbell. “What about paddle board, kayaking and canoeing, so I spoke with the council and they sounded very agreeable, and we felt we could put on a race in the lake yard."
The idea for the first ever DeFuniak Springs Lake Fest came from the city's annual Chautauqua Festival.
Organizers want to stage races on the lake, and bring-in vendors and entertainment.
Locals believe people will be drawn to the variety of activities available.
"To view not only our historic aspect, but also bird watching in the lake yard, or canoeing, kayaking in the lake, fishing for that matter,” said Sara Bowers, DeFuniak Springs City Manager. “Or just a wonderful stroll around all the Victorian homes that are around the lake."
Campbell hopes it will encourage more people to use the lake year round.
"We are also talking about having triathlons and things at different times of the year,” said Mayor Campbell. “And there are already several activities that go on in the lake yard; just we are looking at bigger and broader."
The city has already scheduled the first Lake Fest 5K for Saturday June, 7th.
