DeFuniak Springs Proposing New Recreation Facilities

DEFUNIAK SPRINGS The City of DeFuniak Springs built Gene Hurley Park back in the 90's. The parks fully equipped with a number of ball fields, a basketball court and playgrounds

Located next to the DeFuniak Springs Airport, the park has seen fewer visitors over the years, mainly because of its location; it’s not centralized.

So, DeFuniak Springs officials are thinking about building those same amenities at the Wee Care Park ---which is run by the county.

"We started talking to the county well what if we added amenities to your current park? And their Park and Recreation Department got really excited and were able to fit in everything we have three ball fields, soccer fields, basketball, racquet ball and some playground equipment,” said City Manager Sara Bowers.

City officials say they think putting the two parks together will be a great asset for the community.

While everything is still in the discussion stage, public works officials say if this concept passes the biggest expense would be adding the same amount of lights to Wee Care Park that the Gene Hurley Park has.

"Once we build the ball fields, with the help of the county, getting the lighting out there with the sports at night that is what we are looking for,” said Tilman Mears, Director for the DeFuniak Springs Public Works.

Bowers says if the plan moves forward they'll use the park located near the airport for economic development.

Walton County Commissioners will decide during Tuesday’s board meeting if they want to move ahead with the city's proposal.
