Deceased Inmate's Family Files Lawsuit

The family of a local man is suing the Bay County Sheriff's Office and a jail house nurse alleging he died due to a lack of medical care.

Authorities were holding 38 year old James Timothy Buchanan in the Bay County jail on April 20th, 2012 when he began acting strangely.

Witnesses say he was physically and mentally disoriented, vomiting uncontrollably, lost control of his bodily functions, and was peaking gibberish.

The lawsuit states nurse Theresa Price examined Buchanan, determined his problems were mental rather than physical, and had him moved to the psych ward of the jail.

The next morning Buchanan was unconscious.

Paramedics took him to Bay Medical, where doctors determined he'd suffered a brain hemorrhage, and by that time there was nothing they could do.

Buchanan died 2 days later.

Buchanan's mother is suing on behalf of his 3 children.

The sheriff's office declined to comment on a pending lawsuit.
